Abstract

This research shows the chemical modification of natural Clinoptilolite Zeolite that is produced in Mexico. The aim of this work is to increase the Ca++ ions concentration, in order to improve the N2 adsorption when this zeolite is used as filler in the preparation of hybrid membranes, with possible application in gas mixtures separation. At the first step, chemical bonding vibrations of the natural Zeolite were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and its thermal stability by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). Clinoptilolite Zeolite was modified with CaCl2 solutio to replace Na+ for Ca++ cations into the Zeolite microstructure. The modified samples were characterized by quantitative analyses using atomic absorption and a comparative semi-quantitative analysis by scanning electron microscopy with spectrometer of energy dispersive (SEM-EDS). The result shows that the chemical modification was obtained in the external surface as well as in the internal cavities of the zeolite.
